Where does our water come from?

Ground Water supplies all the water for Summerside.  The City maintain 10 active wells to ensure we have plenty of clean, fresh water.  We adhere to the Health Canada Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality to ensure that our water is the best choice for the health of you and your family.  From Nitrates to Bacteria, we have our water analyzed on a regular basis to ensure it meets the strict guidelines set out by Health Canada.

More information on the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines can be found on Health Canada's website: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/water-eau/drink-potab/guide/index-eng.php.

Why does my water smell like chlorine?

The City of Summerside uses chlorine for disinfection of drinking water.  Injecting liquid hypochlorite into our water fulfills our regulated requirement for water disinfection set out by the PEI Department of Enviornment.  It also ensures that no one will become sick from drinking our water.  Our chlorine is injected into the water supply at each of the wells.  In fact, our computerized well control system ensures that wells run only if their chlorination systems are working properly.  Our certified staff test our water at numberous locations several times per week to verify that the level of chlorine meets the industry standard.

Does our water have flouride in it?  What about other water treatments?

Summerside water does not have flouride added.  It is not subject to any water treatment processes.  The injection of chlorine is the only process our water goes through before it comes to your property.
