FireFighters respond to Summerside School fire

An early morning fire that began in the janitor’s room forced the closure of classes at Athena Consolidated School in Summerside.

Jim Peters, the chief of the Summerside fire department, said the call came in about 3:15 a.m.

“The hallways were full of smoke and we found the fire in the janitor’s room. The sprinkler system held the fire to one area in the room, so the sprinkler system did its job,” Peters said.

“There is a little bit of smoke and a little bit of water but the fire was contained. We very easily put it out.”

Peters said the fire is believed to be accidental, but the provincial fire marshal is investigating the cause.

The school is expected to be closed Friday to allow for cleanup.
